Seminar on “Climate Finance & Mitigation” on 26th November 2024, hosted by the Earth Watch Club at Forman Christian College (A Chartered University)

Earth Watch Club hosted a seminar titled “Climate Finance & Mitigation” in collaboration with the Millennium Fellowship and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), with sponsorship from DSG Energy, a leading solar company. The seminar highlighted the pivotal role of climate finance in mitigating climate change and building resilience by funding renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and adaptation efforts, particularly in vulnerable communities. It explored tools like green bonds and carbon markets, which drive low-carbon economies and attract sustainable investments, reducing risks while fostering economic growth. The event drew over 45 participants, including students and professionals from FCCU and institutions across Lahore, fostering insightful discussions on sustainable solutions.

Ms. Maryam Khan, a climate advocate specializing in policy, strategy, and adaptation, emphasized the importance of gender equality in climate advocacy. She discussed her work in global climate research, writing, and communication through the Climate Narrative Platform (CNP), and as a consultant, she highlighted how policy advocacy, storytelling, and “conscious entrepreneurship” promote climate resilience in both the Global South and North. She also stressed the role of financial instruments and policies in advancing a circular financial economy.

Dr. Jamshed Ali, Assistant Professor and JS Bank Chair in Sustainable Finance and Fintech at Beaconhouse National University, shared his expertise in climate finance, ESG, sustainability reporting, and governance. As a Climate Finance Specialist, he detailed his experience working with organizations like the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government and the European Union to address challenges in sustainable development and climate finance. His research includes analyzing determinants of sovereign risk in Pakistan and contributing to Green Climate Fund (GCF) reports.

This seminar, organized by the Earth Watch Club under the Leadership of President Farhan Ashraf, served as a platform to connect stakeholders and align efforts with key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These included SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 8: Economic growth and decent work highlighting the importance of collaborative approaches to advancing climate resilience, promoting renewable energy, and fostering global partnerships for sustainability.
