DGS and Department of Geography visits PDMA

Dean’s Geographical Society (DGS) and the Geography Department, collectively, arranged an educational trip of 30 students to Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Lahore on Wednesday 09 May 2018.

Arrived at PDMA, along with Chairperson of Geography Department, Mr Kashif Shafique joining the students and faculty members. The tour started with Dr Khurram Shahzad, Director PDMA, briefing the students with a presentation regarding the functions and purpose with performance of disaster management teams. The presentation provided with extensive information about the mechanism of the community working behind improved initiatives. The role of Geographic Information System (GIS) and collaboration and coordination with the Meteorological Department, (which was recently visited in a tour organized by DGS), were discussed as important elements. He also emphasized to sign a MoU with the Department of Geography to initiate the joint research collaboration as well. Alongside discussing in an informative yet friendly manner, PDMA team were pleasant hosts. They served the group of students and faculty members, twice, with refreshments.

Shortly after, Mr Nisar Ahmed, Assistant Director (Coordination and Response) demonstrated the use of statistics collected, with areas geotagged and how the collected data could prove to several uses and is well updated at most times. The monitoring screens and a tidy working environment at PDMA proved to be highly impressive and enjoyable. Students learnt in a comfortable environment and turned this into a partially recreational trip with the welcoming aura of PDMA members, a significantly commendable visit.
