EWC holds lecture on Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity of Butterflie
The Earth Watch Club held a lecture on Wednesday 24 September 2014 on the Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity of Butterflies. Mr. Hassaan Bin Saadat was the guest speaker at the event. Mr Saadat is not only an Environmentalist but is also a social activist and a motivational speaker. He is a nature explorer, having travelled Pakistan from north to south. He has worked with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) on various projects, Ecological baseline assessment, urban forestry, climate change and biodiversity. He has trained and taught many people and has raised concerns for the degradation of the environment of Pakistan. He is also a member of different environmental interest groups, part of the Rotary International for community and vocational services, and has represented Pakistan at various platforms including in Turkey and India.
The lecture discussed how our climate is changing rapidly and that butterflies are sensitive to the climate change. Mr Saadat has studied the impact of climate change on the biodiversity of butterflies, has developed a baseline of butterflies of northern coniferous forests and has also studied how the climate is changing and impacting the local flora and fauna. He rightly pointed out that very little has been done on climate change and its impact on the local flora and fauna of Pakistan.It was a very interactive lecture and both the Environmental Science Majors and faculty members attended it.
The Earth Watch Club is also going to start a series of informal interactive sessions called Cafe Green. In every session, an intellectual will be invited and the participating students will discuss a given topic/problem related to the environment.
