EWC helps students calculate their Ecological Footprints

The Earth Watch Club arranged an awareness activity about Ecological Footprints on 29 April 2014. More than 50 students participated in this activity as a team from EWC calculated their Ecological Footprint, helped them understand the impact they are making on the ecology of their planet and how they can reduce their carbon footprints’ impact.

An ecological footprint is a way of measuring the amount of resources that are required to support your lifestyle and compare it to the total number of resources available on the planet. This allows people to determine how many planets’ worth of resources would be required if everyone lived like they do. Globally, humanity’s ecological footprint is about 1.5 Earths, which means that it takes the planet a year and a half to replenish the resources that we consume in a year. Many students were surprised to find out how much higher their footprints were as compared to the global average, and they subsequently were interested in finding out how to reduce their individual ecological footprints.
